How much does a water softener cost? What 160 real installed quotes show

Prices homeowners were quoted for installed water softeners over the past year, from $2,500 to $5,900 for the middle half. How to size one, what a fair quote spells out, and the sales tactics to walk away from.

Water softener prices vary more than almost any other home system. The same size of softener can be quoted at $2,000 by one company and $8,000 by another, and buyers often cannot tell why. We collected the prices homeowners posted when asking whether a quote was fair, to show what people are actually being charged.

What people were quoted, installed

From 160 installed-price quotes that homeowners posted on Reddit's water treatment and plumbing forums between October 2025 and October 2026:

  • Softener only: middle half of quotes $2,500 to $5,900; median about $3,200 (55 quotes).
  • Softener plus a whole-house carbon or iron filter: middle half $3,000 to $6,000; median about $4,200 (59 quotes).
  • Softener plus reverse osmosis (often with a filter too): middle half $3,300 to $8,900; median about $5,500 (46 quotes).
  • Resin replacement or a major repair on an existing system: middle half $475 to $1,300; median about $700 (21 quotes).

How to read this: these are self-reported quotes, not a survey, and people post most often when a price looks high. Treat the numbers as the range you are likely to see, not as a fair-price ruling. The way we gathered them is described at the end.

Do you need a softener at all?

Softeners remove calcium and magnesium. They do not filter chlorine, lead or PFAS. If your water is under about 7 grains per gallon (120 mg/L), many homes do fine without one. Check your city's hardness on our city pages, or test a well. Our softener vs. filter guide covers the alternatives, including salt-free conditioners, which reduce scale but do not soften water.

Size it before you price it

A quote is only comparable if you know what size it is for. A common rule of thumb:

  • Hardness in grains per gallon. If your report is in mg/L, divide by 17.1. Many installers add a few grains for each 1 mg/L of iron.
  • Daily load: people in the home x about 75 gallons each x hardness. A family of four at 10 grains is about 3,000 grains a day.
  • Capacity: enough to go about a week between regenerations. That family uses about 21,000 grains a week, so with a reserve it needs roughly 24,000 to 32,000 grains of usable capacity, which usually means a unit sold as 32,000 to 48,000 grains.

An oversized unit costs more and can waste salt; an undersized one regenerates constantly. Ask each company how they sized it.

What a fair quote spells out

  • Your measured hardness (and iron, if on a well) and the household size they used.
  • Grain capacity and resin volume in cubic feet.
  • The control valve brand and model. Widely used valves such as Fleck and Clack can be serviced by many companies and parts are easy to buy. Proprietary dealer valves usually tie you to that dealer for service.
  • Installation details: bypass valve, drain line, any new plumbing loop, permits.
  • Warranty, split into parts and labor, and who honors it.
  • The total price, not just a monthly payment.

Sales tactics to walk away from

  • The in-home "water test" show. Drops that turn the water a color or soap that will not lather prove hardness, which a $10 strip shows too. They do not justify a premium system.
  • Today-only pricing. A real price is still good next week.
  • A monthly number with no total. Ask for the cash price and the full cost of the financing or rental.
  • Claims that a softener removes "everything." It removes hardness minerals and some iron. Anything else needs a separate filter, and the quote should list it.
  • Pressure to sign at the kitchen table. The FTC's Cooling-Off Rule generally gives you three business days to cancel a sale of $25 or more made in your home.

Ways to pay less

  • Get three quotes and compare them on the list above, not on the brand name.
  • Buy the equipment yourself online with a standard valve, and pay a plumber or installer for the labor. Ask first whether the installer will warranty work on equipment they did not sell.
  • Repair before replacing. Resin often lasts 10 years or more on city water, less on chlorinated or chloraminated water. A failing valve or tired resin can usually be replaced without buying a whole new system.
  • Check local rules. Some California communities restrict salt-based softeners that drain to the sewer.

How we gathered the prices

We read posts from r/WaterTreatment, r/WaterFilters and r/Plumbing dated October 2025 through October 2026 that mentioned a softener and a price. Each quoted or paid amount was pulled from the post text and labeled by system type; amounts that did not appear in the post were dropped. A hand check of a random sample found most labels correct and a few misfiled, such as a filter-only install counted as a combo, so treat the ranges as approximate. We list ranges, not individual posts, and we do not identify anyone.
